PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1. Cold planing and paving work on Airport Road is expected to commence around September 1. Due to the heavy volume of vehicles – approximately 30,000 vehicles per day – these operations will be done at night.

Weekend work is not permitted. Cold planing and paving work on Airport Road is expected to be performed only during overnight hours, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning. The contractor is required to maintain a minimum of one lane in each direction between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. After 10 p.m., the contractor is required to maintain a minimum of one travel lane of alternating traffic. Four full travel lanes will be open each day by 6 a.m.

The state Department of Transportation is in charge of the project.

2. Tax Sale Continued to September 17- Mayor Scott Avedisian announced today that the tax sale, originally set for August 28, has been continued to Wednesday, September 17, 2008.

State law passed two years ago allows Rhode Island Housing to work with homeowners in danger of losing their homes. Rhode Island Housing is required to notify the City Tax Collector 10 days prior to a sale of intent to exercise a right of first refusal on properties and has also indicated a willingness to help local homeowners.

That notification was not made in a timely manner, and Avedisian said he decided to continue the sale in order to afford taxpayers the opportunity to work with Rhode Island Housing to save their properties from tax sale.
