When a special American Liberty Elm puts down roots in Warwick on June 25, it will be much more than a tree. It will be a “Liberty Tree,” a living, growing tribute to our country’s freedom and founding. The City of Warwick Liberty Tree Memorial was made possible by a grant from Elm Research Institute, a non-profit organization in Keene, NH.

Due to an increase in the disposal fees charged by the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC), effective June 15, the city’s Division of Sanitation will no longer be collecting mattresses curbside, nor will they be accepted for disposal at the Department of Public Works.

The City has contracted with Vision Appraisal Technology of Northborough, Massachusetts, to develop and implement the state-mandated statistical property revaluation. The date of this revaluation is December 31, 2009, with assessments appearing on tax bills that will be mailed during the summer of 2010.

Mayor Scott Avedisian, police department officials and the Board of Public Safety will recognize the promotions of six individuals and bestow special commendations on three people for outstanding actions during the Police Department’s promotional and awards ceremony tomorrow at 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers in City Hall.

Mayor Scott Avedisian announced today the distribution of $929,007 in Community Development Block Grant funds to benefit more than a dozen non-profit agencies and a local neighborhood group. The funds will be awarded for the fiscal year beginning July 1.
